Are you passionate about the performing arts? Do you have a keen eye for detail and posses strong written communication skills? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you! We are currently seeking a new Volunteer Theatre Critics to join our team, and contribute to our vibrant arts community.

As a Volunteer Theatre Critic, you will have the opportunity to attend various theatrical performances, ranging from plays and musicals, concerts, showcases, experimental productions etc. Your role will involve analyzing and evaluating the artistic elements of these performances, technical execution and overall production quality. You will then be responsible for crafting well-written and engaging reviews that capture the essence of the performance and provide valuable feedback to both the production team and potential audience members.


Key Duties:

The duties of the Critic/Review writer shall include:

  • Attend assigned theatrical performances in Trinidad and/or Tobago, including plays, musicals, and other productions.
  • Observe and analyze various aspects of each performance, such as acting, directing, staging, lighting, sound, and overall production quality.
  • Take detailed notes during the performance to ensure accurate and comprehensive reviews.
  • Write well-crafted and engaging reviews that capture the essence of the performance and offer thoughtful insights.
  • Express your opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of the production, providing constructive feedback.
  • Meet assigned deadlines for submitting reviews to the editorial team for publication.
  • Stay informed about current trends and developments in the theatre industry to provide relevant and up-to-date commentary.
  • Maintain professionalism and integrity in all interactions with theatre professionals, performers, and fellow critics.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

The ideal candidate should be 18 years or older, and:

  • Own a laptop, tablet or smart device with access to the internet.
  • Have a deep passion for and knowledge of theatre, including a good understanding of different theatrical and performing arts genres, styles, and techniques.
  • Have strong analytical and critical thinking skills to evaluate performances objectively.
  • Posses excellent written communication skills with the ability to articulate thoughts and opinions in a clear and engaging manner.
  • Pay attention to detail and have the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.
  • Be able to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Availability to attend evening and weekend performances that may be assigned.
  • Practical study or experience in theatre, dance, music or other performing arts disciplines would be an asset but not required.
  • Previous experience in writing or reviewing for a publication or academic submission would be an asset but not required.

To be considered, interested persons are required to complete the application form below and submit the following:

  • A brief introduction (no more than one page) highlighting your passion for the performing arts, your interest in the position, as well as outlining any experience or academic study you may have in any performing arts discipline.

  • At least one, but no more than three writing samples that demonstrate your analytical skills (preferably a theatre/ literature review, a descriptive piece, or even a personal reflection). Your writing samples may be submitted as direct uploads, or URLS to articles that may be published on the internet.
