SOL: Female, early – mid 20s, Dougla-West Indian.

Sol is unapologetically herself at just 16 years old she moved out of her single mother’s home as her sexuality was rejected staying true to herself. By 18 years old she was emancipated- legally and soulfully carving out her independence. Although Sol is free spirted and remarkably confident life on her own in a small Caribbean village was not easy. She struggled countless of times but learned through trial and error as her resilience and fearless spirit carried her through. Now at 21 years old, she owns a sustainable coconut business which is a testament to her endurance and her deep-rooted island culture. Additionally, she has built a surrounding community that feels more like family to her than the one she left behind. The name Sol represents freedom, perseverance and fortitude.

ISLA: Female, late teens – mid 20s, Afro-West Indian

At heart, Isla is a gentle soul as she moves through the island with softness that masks her inner strength. As she carries the weight of her mother’s recent passing with whom she shared a close bond, Isla is not her usual self. Her father’s grief has hardened into distance and strictness as she strives to look past it and care for him even though it means hiding her true self and dimming her light. Yet with Sol she finds relief- finally being able let her guard down and break those barriers, Sol brings out the best in her and lets her embrace who she truly is. Her love for Sol grows more than just affection it festers into an escape, a refuge, offering a small glimpse of the life she truly desires but believes she cannot achieve without compromising her relationship with her only parent left.

ISLA’S FATHER: Male, early 40s – 50s, West-Afro Indian.

A proud traditional man that obtains the weight of grief, duty and societal expectations. Rather than expressing concern to his daughter with warmth he prefers structure and discipline. Yet, it was not always like this- Since the loss of his wife he has developed distance and he struggles to reconcile his love for his daughter Isla with the stern values he upholds.
