Title: Indian Bride

Genre: Drama

Synopsis: Ruma, an impressionable young Indo-Trinidadian girl becomes enamoured over her new Auntie Preeti, the first real Indian person she’s ever met. Ruma imagines Preeti as a princess, but as she gets to know her, she becomes more inspired by her passion for adventure, and willingness to break with tradition.

Character Breakdown

FEMALE ROLES

RUMA: Female, 8 – 12 y/o. Indo-Caribbean. A bright eyed and always curious girl, Ruma becomes obsessed with her new Indian Auntie.

PREETI: Female, mid 20’s. Indian (from India). A kind-hearted and soft-featured woman that seems like an Indian princess, but is more of a strong-willed adventurer. Must be able to speak Hindi & English with an educated accent.

LATIKA: Female, 30’s. Indo-Caribbean. Runs the home with a gentle strength, never went to school but life has taught her lessons. Can be strict when she has to be with her children, especially the day dreaming Ruma.

NANI: Female, 60’s. Indo-Caribbean. A traditional woman who becomes emotional when she meets Preeti, and hears her speak Hindi for teh first time since her own days as a young girl.

MALE ROLES

ANAND: Male, 30’s. Indo-Caribbean . Stylish and book-smart man of the 1960s, born in central Trinidad, but moved to Canada to work as a teacher. Has a fatherly feel to him.

VAS: Male, 30’s. Indo-Caribbean . Spent a lifetime working with his hands in the cane fields. A good humored salt of the earth kind of man.

GUEST: Male, 50’s. Indo-Caribbean . Boisterous charming man.

RAJ & SHAMI: Males, 8 – 12 y/o. Indo-Caribbean . Ruma’s brothers. (Non-speaking roles)

TAXI DRIVER: Male, 50’s. Afro-Caribbean. (Non-speaking role)
