Title: A Raisin the Sun (an Excerpt)

Synopsis: The Youngers are a poor African-American family living on the South Side of Chicago. An opportunity to escape from poverty comes in the form of a $10,000 life insurance check that the matriarch of the family (Lena Younger or Mama) receives upon her husband’s death. Lena’s children, Walter and Beneatha, each have their plans for the money. Tensions run high as the dreams clash and outside forces bear down on the family in ways they have never experienced. Each is compelled to undertake complicated decisions that will affect the others and their entire family unit.

Character Descriptions:

Walter Lee Younger: (Male, 30-35) – hard-working; tired of living in poverty; has dreams; wants more from life and is frustrated by a lack of opportunities.

Lena Younger: (Female, 55-60) – Walter Lee’s mother; family matriarch; solid in her beliefs; has worked hard to provide and care for her family; does not always understand some of the “new” ways of doing things. Wise, though uneducated.

Ruth Younger: (Female, 26-35) – Walter Lee’s wife; dutiful; competent; fears that Walter Lee’s dreams are too far-fetched; a realist; poverty-weary.

Beneatha Younger: (Female, 18-20) – Walter Lee’s younger sister; bright; intellectual; attends college to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor; knows it all and has a disdain for her older brother who clearly doesn’t.

Travis Younger: (Male, 8-12) – son of Walter Lee and Ruth. Energetic; hopeful; looks up to his father; loves his mother but often clashes with her. Discouraged about the family’s financial situation.

Joseph Asagai: (Male, 19-25) – Nigerian college student, friend and suitor of Beneatha. The most travelled character and therefore brings a vastly different perspective for Beneatha to consider.
