Workshop Description: 

– Would you like to work on a papier-mache mas that looks like this?
– Are you 18 or older and interested in learning traditional mas-crafts?
– Is your community group (Ramleela, Best Village, Orisha shrine etc) in need of a skill to aid in the making of effigies, props, masks?
– Are you a mas practitioner interested in upgrading your skills to a vocational certificate?

Emancipation Mas offers 90 contact hours of training and practice in traditional mas-crafts including cardboard-sculpting, wire-bending, and papier-mâché. And this year, Jouvay Ayiti is pleased to feature among their esteemed faculty, master papier-mâché mas artist Didier Civil from Jacmel, Haiti.

In addition, this year Jouvay Ayiti will also be offering 4 short community outreach workshops for groups who may be interested.

Facilitators:  

Didier Civil was born in 1973 in Jacmel, the arts, papier-mâché and carnival centre of Haiti, where he still lives. He is an artist who works in papier-mâché and has spent a long time teaching his trade to young adults and children. As a result of these skills, many of them are now able to provide for their families. This is the reason he founded Centre de Formation Artistique de Jacmel (CFAJ) – to keep the ripple effects of mentorship and teaching, reaching into the future.

“When I do papier-mâché, I like to create the personalities of Vodou and scenes of life around me. Vodou is part of my culture, and papier-mâché is a way to show the world what it means, and the value it holds.”

“The real value of papier-mâché occurred to me when I learned about Lyonel Simonis, a master and pioneer of papier-mâché mask-making. He was the first to make masks representing the indigenous inhabitants of Haiti. Being an artist enables me to show this art form, and its place in mask-making history, to the world.”
